The President of
Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT), Mr. King Ali Awudu has pleaded
with the government to consult Teachers Union (TU) before passing the education
bill into an act.
According to him, the
country will be doomed if education is decentralized and becomes department
under the local government in the Metropolitan, Municipal and District
Assemblies (MMDAs).
He made this appeal at
the 24th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Koforidua on Wednesday.
It was on the theme “The Plight of teachers and CCT in the region.”
It was on the theme “The Plight of teachers and CCT in the region.”
The meeting was aimed
at finding lasting solution to teachers’ predicament and challenges they face
in teaching.
Mr. Awudu indicated
that teachers are the root of success of every nation therefore they should be
fairly treated.
“We are the largest
stakeholders in the educational sector and the backbone of every nation’s
success so our needs must be addressed and well solved,” he said.
He stressed the need
for teachers’ arrears and allowances to increase adding that “teachers’ train
the human resource of the country hence they need to be paid better than the
leaders.”
Mr. Adokwei Awulley, the
Communication Director of CCT on his part said the only way to fight poverty
and the challenges confronting the nation was through education.
He urged the leadership
of CCT to continue being transparent to pursue their quest of promoting quality
education in the country.
However, Mr. Awulley commended
CCT for the good measures put in place to ensure that the government fulfill it
promises to teachers in 2018, saying “members should be rest assured that
leadership is up to task to ensure that the government pay their salary arrears
and Tier Two Pension Scheme (TTPS).”
The Deputy
Communication Director, Mr. Norbert Gbogbotsi noted that the coalition would
not shield any member who would bring the teaching profession into disrepute.
“Though some teachers
are not living up to their responsibilities, a great majority are doing
extremely well and must be acknowledged and rewarded accordingly, especially
those in remote areas,” he said.
He assured members that
their district officers will receive motorbikes as soon as their offices are
put in place in the 73 demarcated districts within the country.
